Gathering the Towns Voice

fresh-perspective-logo-jpeg-2.jpg

Fresh Perspective are currently collaborating with a few local artists/designers to develop a project that we can embed within Skipton town surrounding colour, such as a mural or an interactive design. Through community collaboration and research this project aims to encourage community engagement as well as boost the towns morale and mental health – by spreading joy and the feeling of inclusion.

Online survey – Questions I want answering to be able to embed the voice of Skipton’s residents into the design draft;

How old are you?

Do you currently or have you previously lived in Skipton or surrounding areas?

Do you feel that Skipton town is currently visually representing the community? If not, please let us know what you think is missing.

Would you like to see colour or some other form of art within Skipton?

What words or phrases would you use to describe or represent Skipton?

Do you associate any particular colours with Skipton?

Which basic shape(s) do you feel represent Skipton best?

Are there any shapes/colours/phrases that you would like to see within your town?

If given the chance, would you like the chance to submit your own shapes/drawings for a local mural project?

Once we had successfully gained a good amount of data from the online survey, we turned to finding places, groups and classes that we could distribute physical copies of the survey to try and reach a greater audience. This always gave us the chance to test out which of the 4 most popular colours chosen in the online survey was more welcoming – to do this we printed out the same survey in the 4 chosen colours (Red, Yellow, Green & Blue) and asked that those that distributed our surveys for us laid each colour out in a line. Which ever colour was the most picked up showed us that that was the one that either stood out the most or was the more ‘approachable’ colour.

We managed to get local courses, colleges and groups to get on board with our idea – which led us gaining some fantastic feedback.

I also got talking to some of the local council members who informed us of a project they had try to put into action a few years back regarding Skipton’s ginnels/alleyways. They had a similar theme to this project, which was to try and find ways to encourage people to use them by brightening them up and making them look more appealing. They even provided us with the data they had collected over the length of time they spent on the project, this included a map of all of Skipon’s ginnels/alleyways as well as some research that had been carried out on the most used ones. This was so helpful, as not only do I aim to create one bright space within Skipton, I had also wanted to embed further elements of this into nearby alleyways and pathways.
