This week we were asked to compose our solutions from last week into a short film proposal.
To begin with, I wasn’t entirely sure what type of language I wanted to use within the video as I wasn’t sure which audience I’d like to target first, the graphic designs who could help implement the change or the creatives that would directly benefit from this campaign. In the end I decided it would be best to speak to both target audiences, because even the most successful of graphic designers will of started of with a struggle for recognition, so it’ll be easy for them to relate to those that are there now.
When I revisited what I wanted my core message to be, I was still certain that I wanted to ‘re-frame creativity’, however I wanted it to be a little more fluid than that. And as I couldn’t find one word that captured that essence, I decided it would be best just to have the ‘RE’ as the stand alone text whilst other words fit into it to create multiple different narratives to the message.
Throughout this project I really wanted to focus on opening up the term ‘creative’ as it covers a huge variety of different types of work, whether they’re aware of it or not (builders, bakers, tattooist ect) – to reflect this I used video footage as well as still images I had gathered over the week.
One of the image sources came from my interview that I did with the local florist. Sue Dobson lives in Bradley and runs a floristry business from home, The Yorkshire Dales Flower Company . She was kind enough to let me explore her beautiful garden(s) and workshop to gain a better idea of how she works and of course take photographs for this weeks work.
During my interview with Sue, when asked whether or not she deemed her type of work to be creative, she said something that I think really captures the drive of creativity.
“Yes, of course. I believe it is. I believe in my garden and what comes out of it. “
It was really interesting speaking with Sue and it was a huge eye opener to just how much we rely on paperwork to determine our skills. Although all of her work is hands on, she had tons and tons of paperwork from her years at college previously and she admitted that most of which wasn’t really relevant.
She later went on to add that the key parts of her role where you 100% need to attend some kind of training was when you wanted to hang flowers on a ceiling frame for health and safety purposes. But that wasn’t actually covered in the college course and she had to seek out this training independently.
I’m actually quite pleased with my final video outcome, however I wish I had had more time to gather video footage of my own. If I was to follow this project up I would like to capture quite intermediate moments of the creation process to tried and capture the level of focus as well as the enjoyment someone goes through.
Also I would of liked to of gotten through edited the interview further so I could of used more of that in there, but I just didn’t feel like there was enough time within the 2 minute time slot we were given. Maybe next time I’ll break the rules a little bit.
